THE REBONKERS STORY — ONCE UPON A TIME

The biggest stage for contemporary art in Varna – the ReBonkers space, opened its doors less than 2 years ago, but in its short experience it has already held more than 100 events with the participation of 342 artists from Varna, Bulgaria and the world. ReBonkers' program is multidisciplinary and includes contemporary theater and dance, film, experimental music, literature and discussion of social issues, but a major focus of the program is contemporary visual art.

The space is distinguished by unusual architecture and acoustics - a tunnel-like round stone building with a natural green roof. This year the building turns 200 years old and is actually the oldest fully preserved building in the maritime capital. Back in 1823, the stone building was built by the Ottoman authorities as a storehouse for gunpowder. Many call it the bunker, but the correct term for the building is "gunpowder burial".

Always cool inside, with no phone signal and with a huge garden, ReBonkers boasts a rich history. In the 1990s, the club "Bonkers" was housed there, which was among the first scenes for alternative music in Bulgaria. Key to the development of gangs such as Rag Dolls, Babyface Clan, Pyromania, Big Mama Scandal, Slang and others. At the turn of the millennium, the "bunker" fell into disrepair and turned into a weedy abode of the homeless.

In 2017 "Taliana" association is engaged in its improvement. Varna organization that works to activate the creative potential of a city. Through innovation and art, the association "Talyana" helps preserve the architectural heritage of the city and meets the public with new and different forms of cultural consumption.
